UPDATE: A reader has pointed out that the distance from the nearest point on Catalina Island to San Pedro’s Cabrillo Beach is approximately 18 miles, as the crow flies. Another reader has explained how the 30 mile distance was approximated in the comments.

30miledive.com is reporting that undersea explorer Scott Cassell completed his dive from Catalina island to San Pedro, California this past Saturday (September 17). Cassell was attempting to break a world record for a continuous dive, but equipment issues required Cassell to surface mid-way through the journey.

According to 30miledive.com, Cassell continued on with the dive after a brief surface interval on a support boat and completed the underwater trek in approximately 12 hours.

According to Cassell, his motivation for the dive was to “raise awareness about our shark populations.” He goes on to say that he remembers seeing many blue sharks (Prionace glauca) 20 years ago in the same waters he recently completed the distance dive. However, during his dive on Saturday, Cassell states that he did not see a single shark.

From YouTube user davidwlitchfield comes a video featuring a white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) getting briefly stuck in the lower opening of a surface cage. After bumping into the boat, the shark quickly turns and gets his nose in between the bars of the cage. The diver in the cage is able to push the shark back using his camera allowing the shark to freely swim away.

The video description doesn’t indicate where this encounter took place, but given the time of year (assuming the video was shot recently) and the visibility, my guess would be South Australia.

Gillette has unveiled a new ad campaign for its Proglide series that centers around two divers shaving underwater in the Bahamas in baited shark scenario. The ad uses the old “sharks can smell a drop of blood from a quarter of a mile away” bit and portrays the sharks as becoming seemingly aggressive after one of the divers after apparently nicks himself shaving with an inferior disposable razor.

So, the next time you’re doing a shark dive and decide that you need a shave, remember to use you Gillette Proglide. If not, quick edits and ominous music are sure to follow.

You can also check out the Gillette ProGlide – Shark Teaser for more of the “scariest shave” campaign.

XOOC, a non-profit marine conservation group based in Mexico, produced the video above, which focuses on the bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) of Mexico’s Playa del Carmen.

Last fall, dozens of Playa’s bull sharks were killed by a local fisherman, who was paid 118,000 pesos (roughly $10,000 USD) for the sharks, according the video. The video also goes on to note that living sharks can bring in up to $300,000 USD dollars in tourism revenue per season. However, the fisherman who caught the sharks, argued that it was more profitable for him to catch and sell the sharks, since it was less dangerous and only required 4 hours of work.

Playa del Carmen had become a popular dive site in recent years and was known as one of the hot spots for diving with bull sharks.

(Note: This video showed up on YouTube yesterday, but was originally posted on Vimeo several months ago.)
